ACTION NEEDED ON PATIENTS BILL OF RIGHTS"

Tell Congress : "Just Say No to Lawyers"

July 12, 2001

Congress will take up the "Patients Bill of Rights" again, this time in the House. Dont let the House of Representatives be sold the same "Bill of Goods" disguised as a "Bill of Rights" that passed the Senate.

The American taxpayer might as well kiss his tax rebate check goodbye -- he'll need it as a downpayment on the increase on medical premiums if the Senate version passes the House.

Heres some more information weve found reading the bill (something most of the Senators who voted yes havent done) -- the bill includes provisions on determining "medical necessity." This is 17 giant steps backwards towards government control of medicine and rationing that we thought we defeated in 1994.

As the House moves to consider the Ganske-Dingell-Norwood version of the Kennedy-Edwards-McCain bill, we have three action steps:

1) Please help educate the public. Weve posted a printer-friendly version of a one-page flyer to distribute.

2) Tell President Bush thanks for supporting patients, not trial lawyers by threatening to veto a bill that gives free rein to litigation. Let the White House know you stand behind him. The Presidents email is [email protected].

3) Tell Congress and the AMA what you think about this sweetheart deal for trial lawyers. And since the AMA is so anxious to shove this bill down our throats, we suggest you use the AMAs own website to send the message.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AN AMA MEMBER OR A DOCTOR TO USE THEIR MESSAGE SERVICE!

The AMA "contact Congress" page is at www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/4016.html. Be sure to check the box to send the AMA a copy of your message.

PLEASE ACT TODAY!
