FREE ADVICE AAPS staff and members
have heard dozens of HIPAA “experts” at $2,000 conferences, and reviewed
the expensive compliance software and training tools. At best, the advice has
been conflicting, unclear and in many cases, simply wrong. We are concerned that this expensive,
useless advice is a time bomb that will explode months or years from now,
resulting in prosecution and fines.
And of course, the consultants will bear no liability. If you must comply with HIPAA, why
spend thousands of dollars on questionable advice? AAPS recommends that you use the free
resources available from the agency that will ultimately be responsible for
enforcing the regulations. Then, if
are you found in “non-compliance,” it will be based on the government’s own
interpretation of the regulations.
That could be the basis for an excellent defense if you are
investigated. Use their guidelines to do the
minimum possible, and support our efforts to overturn the law!
