Model ResolutionsSubject: Sham Peer ReviewWhereas, Sham peer review has been occurring with increasing frequency, and Whereas, our AMA according to an editorial in the March 15, 2004 issue of AM News stated that peer review must have absolute immunity, and Whereas, “bad faith” peer review is destructive and protects the collective rather than the individual physician, and Whereas, a physician can be inappropriately labelled as a disruptive physician by “bad faith” peer review, and thus have his or her life ruined by dishonest peer reviewers; therefore, be it Resolved that the ISMS send a resolution to our AMA directing our AMA to change its position on absolute immunity in peer review to immunity only in cases where “good faith” has been shown by those individuals and entities involved in the peer review process.
