The “one thing that could kill Medicare” in the Democrats’ view….

Is not the crushing unfunded liabilities, the exodus of physicians, or the archaic benefits package. No, the biggest danger is competition from private plans, according to Kent Conrad (D-ND), quoted in an October 24 Associated Press story by Mark Sherman.

If private industry could offer a more advantageous product (imagine, more advantageous than Medicare!), seniors who could do so might to for it. Sicker patients would, it is argued, still be stuck with Medicare. It is only fair that all should share the misery.
