News of the Day ... in Perspective4/8/2005Senate to consider “REAL ID” Act Attached to a “must pass” bill concerning money for Iraq operations and tsunami relief is language concerning federal requirements for drivers’ licenses that moves far beyond the intelligence reform bill. Sensitive information on individual identification would be included in a nationwide data base also shared with Canada and Mexico. Some fear the Act could introduce back-door gun control because a mainstream gun-rights organization could be deemed a “terrorist” organization, and its members could be denied drivers’ licenses by order of the Department of Homeland Security. The National Council of State Legislators calls the mandates on states “impossible,” and estimates initial compliance costs of $500 to $750 million.
