Tale of Two PunishmentsDr. Bob Mitrione was convicted of billing fraud for a grand total of $75.25 (that's right, only about $75) based on perjured testimony by a key government employee. He was a psychiatrist in private practice in Springfield, Illinois. The judge sentenced Bob to 23 months in jail despite finding that the key government testimony at trial was "false to a dramatic degree." The same judge who sentenced Bob has just sentenced a defendant who pled guilty to stealing $69,929.31 from Illini Bank while serving as its branch manager. The sentence? Five months in jail followed by five months home confinement. The assault on the practice of private medicine continues.
