Exemption from Hospital Vaccine Mandate
Many hospitals are requiring physicians to take the annual flu vaccine. This not because it helps patients, but because hospitals get a tiny increase in reimbursements if the entire staff is vaccinated. Lobbyists for Big Pharma probably put this reimbursement boost into law to sell more of their product. AAPS does not take a position on the annual flu vaccine, but we do take a position in favor of individual freedom to decline it. Fortunately, hospitals are supposed to recognize a religious exemption, and vaccines are not kosher under some interpretations of the Bible. AAPS has posted a template exemption... read more
American Children Need Access to Better Vaccines
As measles spreads, pressures are increasing to force reluctant parents to fully vaccinate their children. Gov. Christie is severely criticized for suggesting that there should be a choice, states the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). AAPS is opposed to mandatory vaccination, holding that patients have the right to refuse medical treatment, and that vaccines, like all medical interventions, have risks as well as benefits, which vary with individuals and circumstances. “We should ask why some parents reject MMR (measles-mumps-rubella vaccine),” states AAPS executive director Jane M. Orient, M.D. One reason is moral. Merck’s MMR vaccine is manufactured using... read more

Physicians Oppose Mandatory Flu Vaccine for Health Workers
In letters to Colorado public health officials, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) opposes a rule requiring workers in health care facilities to have an annual influenza vaccination or lose their jobs. Workers who had a rare religious or medical exemption would be required to wear a mask in patient care areas from November through March. The religious exemption is too narrowly drawn, AAPS writes, and should be a philosophical exemption, as accepted in many states, to “to avoid inquisitions into matters of faith.” The mask requirement “seems to be nothing more than a punitive retaliation against those... read more
Doctors Oppose Maryland Vaccine Roundup
November 16, 2007 For Immediate Release: Expect dangerous reactions when children are treated like cattle Washington, D.C. -- The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons today condemned the “vaccine roundup” executed in Prince George’s county Maryland this week, and promised to do everything it can to support parents who refuse to immunize their children. “This power play obliterates informed consent and parental rights,” said Kathryn Serkes, director of policy for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), one of the few national physician groups that refuse corporate funding from pharmaceutical companies. In a scenario reminiscent of cattle round-ups, the... read more
