AAPS has joined dozens of organizations across the country in a bi-partisan effort to oppose increased government surveillance of citizens, and is a major player in organizing the efforts.

The ad hoc coalition, which includes such diverse groups as the American Conservative Union, Americans for Tax Reform and the ACLU, has sent two forceful letters to stave off increased federal powers.

The first, addressed to President Bush, outlines our opposition to the creation of a domestic spy agency:

“…the proposed agency's fundamental mission appears to frustrate a basic American principle: that law-abiding Americans should not fear intrusive, long-term investigation by their government.”

The second, sent to Congress, opposes the Domestic Security Enhancement Act (DSEA), legislation whose existence was revealed in draft form on Friday, February 7, 2003.

“The draft bill contains a multitude of new and sweeping law enforcement and intelligence gathering powers, many of which are not related to terrorism, that would severely dilute, if not undermine, many basic constitutional rights.”

Both letters are posted at www.aapsonline.org, along with links to analysis by various signatories, and the draft bill.
